Waffle Stitch Hat

Materials Used:
Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic medium (“4”) weight yarn- color “Super Duper Yellow “
Size 7 (4.5 mm) 16″ circular needle (For cuff ribbing)
Size 8 (5 mm) 16″ circular needle (For main part of hat)
Size 8 (5 mm) double pointed needles- set of 4 (For crown decreases)
Stitch marker (to note the end/beg of each round)
Yarn needle
Gauge: In waffle stitch pattern, 6 rounds and 24 sts= 4″
Sizing: to fit an adult woman’s head, about 21″-22″ head circumference; total length of hat 8″.
Abbreviations Used (American Terminology):
CO- cast on
st(s)- stitch(es)
K- knit
P- purl
K2tog- knit 2 stitches together
Special Notes/Instructions:
The instructions shown will make an average length hat, however, if you wish to make the hat longer, simply repeat the waffle stitch pattern more times until the desired length is reached.
Change to the dpn’s when working the crown decreases when the stitches are getting too tight to move around the circular.
Waffle Stitch Pattern:
Rounds 1 and 2- P around
Rounds 3 and 4- (K2, P2) around
Instructions:
With Size 7 needle, CO 96, join to work in the round
Work K2, P2 ribbing for 1 inch
Change to Size 8 needle
Work the Waffle Stitch Pattern 8 times, then repeat rounds 1 and 2 one more time
Crown Decreasing:
Round 1- (K2, P2tog) repeat around (72 sts)
Round 2- (K2, P1) repeat around (72 sts)
Rounds 3 and 4- P around (72 sts)
Round 5- (K2tog, P1) around (48 sts)
Round 6- (K1, P1) around (48 sts)
Rounds 7 and 8- P around (48 sts)
Round 9- (K2tog) around (24 sts)
Round 10- (K2tog) around (12 sts)
Round 11- (K2tog) around (6 sts)
Cut yarn and with a yarn needle, weave the yarn tail through the remaining 6 stitches on the needle. Remove the stitches from the needle, pull the yarn tightly to close the hole, secure the yarn and weave the yarn tail in.
