Slouchy Hat

Materials Used:
Mainstays Basics 100% acrylic medium (“4”) weight yarn
Size 4.5 mm 16 inch circular needle
Size 5 mm 16 inch circular needle
Size 5 mm dpn’s (set of 4)
Stitch marker (for noting the beg/end of rounds)
Yarn needle
Sizing: Adult medium
Finished Measurements: (Unstretched) Ribbed cuff 20” circumference; body of hat (at widest point) 23” circumference; total hat length (crown to bottom edge of ribbing) 10”; ribbing length 1 ½”
Gauge: 6 rounds and 5 sts= 1” (in stockinette stitch on 5 mm needle)
Abbreviations Used (American Terminology):
CO- cast on
st(s)- stitch(es)
K2tog- knit 2 sts together (decrease)
K- knit
P- purl
Kfb- knit into the front of the st then knit into the back of the st (increase)
Special Notes:
- The ribbing of the hat is worked using the smaller (4.5 mm) needle, and then the larger (5 mm) needle is used for the rest of the hat.
- Switch from the circular needle to dpn’s when there are too few stitches left to comfortably work with.
- You can make the hat more or less slouchy by increasing or decreasing the amount of rounds worked even (round 5 repeat) for the body of the hat.
Instructions:
Beginning with the ribbing:
With size 4.5 mm circular needle, CO 97 sts
First- K2tog to join the round, K2, P1, *(K3, P1), repeat from * around (96 sts)
Next- Work in K3, P1 ribbing until 1 ½” from the beginning
The Body of the hat:
Change to size 5 mm circular needle
Round 1- K around (96 sts)
Round 2- *(K11, kfb) repeat from * around (104 sts)
Round 3- K around (104 sts)
Round 4- *(K12, kfb) repeat from * around (112 sts)
Round 5- K around (112 sts)
Repeat Round 5 until hat measures 8” from the beginning
Begin decreasing for crown (change to dpn’s when there are too few sts left on the needle to comfortably work with):
Round 1- *(K12, k2tog) repeat from * around (104 sts)
Round 2- K around (104 sts)
Round 3- *(K11, k2tog) repeat from * around (96 sts)
Round 4- K around (96 sts)
Round 5- *(K10, k2tog) repeat from * around (88 sts)
Round 6- K around (88 sts)
Round 7- *(K9, k2tog) repeat from * around (80 sts)
Round 8- K around (80 sts)
Round 9- *(K8, k2tog) repeat from * around (72 sts)
Round 10- K around (72 sts)
Round 11- *(K7, k2tog) repeat from * around (64 sts)
Round 12- K around (64 sts)
Round 13- *(K6, k2tog) repeat from * around (56 sts)
Round 14- *(K5, k2tog) repeat from * around (48 sts)
Round 15- *(K4, k2tog) repeat from * around (40 sts)
Round 16- *(K3, k2tog) repeat from * around (32 sts)
Round 17- *(K2, k2tog) repeat from * around (24 sts)
Round 18- *(K1, k2tog) repeat from * around (16 sts)
Round 19- *(K2tog) repeat from * around (8 sts)
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Using yarn needle, weave the yarn tail through the remaining 8 sts (optional, weave through these 8 sts twice). Pull the yarn tightly to close the hole. Secure yarn and weave in the end.
