Red Heart Super Saver- 1 skein white, 1 skein orchid

5 mm straight knitting needles

Yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming hood closed

Crochet hook for adding fringe (I used a 4.5 mm hook)

(Optional) pom pom maker (I just wrapped the yarn around 3 fingers)

scissors

Gauge: 17 st and 28 rows= 4 inches (in garter st)

Finished Measurements: each scarf half= 22 inches long; hood= 18 inches (before seaming); hood from face edge to hood tip/point= 17 inches; scarf width= 8 inches. Total length before seaming hood= 62 inches long. Total length after seaming hood= 53 inches long.

This scarf was made for my almost 4 year old daughter.

Abbreviations Used (US Terminology):

CO- cast on

K- knit

RS- right side

WS- wrong side

Sts- stitches

K1- knit one

M1- make one (increase)

K2tog- knit two stitches together (decrease)

Notes:

For increasing, you M1 by knitting the stitch as you normally would, but keep the st on the needle, then knitting into the back loop of the same st. Then you slide the st off the needle and onto the other needle

For hood shaping- You will be increasing by 1 stitch at the beginning of every other RS row of the hood, and you will be decreasing by 1 stitch at the end of every other WS row of the hood.

Instructions:

Starting at the first scarf end with Orchid, CO 34 sts

Row 1 (RS)- K across (34 sts)

Repeat Row 1 until scarf measures 22 inches, ending by working a WS row

Change to White

Next- Repeat Row 1 for 2 more rows (34 sts on each row)

Beginning Hood:

First we increase to make the hood…

Row 1 (RS)- (K1, M1), K across to the end of the row (35 sts)

Row 2 (WS)- K across (35 sts)

Repeat these 2 rows until there are 66 sts on your needle, ending by working a WS row

Now we begin decreasing the hood…

Row 1 (RS)- K across (66 sts)

Row 2 (WS)- K across to the last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 (65 sts)

Repeat these 2 rows until there are 34 sts left on your needle, ending by working a WS row

Next- Repeat Row 1 for 2 more rows (34 sts on each row)

Change to Orchid

Beginning second half of scarf:

Row 1 (RS)- K across (34 sts)

Repeat Row 1 until second scarf half measures 22 inches, ending by working a WS row.

Bind off.

Weave in all ends.

Using your yarn needle, sew the back/bottom seam of the hood closed. This will form the pointed tip of the hood.

Add a pompom to the tip of the hood. I held both white and orchid together and wrapped them together around 3 fingers until it was thick enough for my liking, tied it, then trimmed the pom pom to my liking.

Add fringe to each end of the scarf. For each end, I cut 17 orchid strips of yarn and 17 strips of white yarn, all about 12 inches long. Then using a crochet hook I looped the yarn pieces through each stitch (with RS of work facing me), alternating the colors every other stitch (so I started with an orchid strip and ended with a white strip). I didn’t bother trimming the fringe, as I like it kind of jagged looking, but you can trim the fringe if that’s your preference.
