Newborn Hat & Mitten Set

Materials Used:
Baby Bee Sweet Delight Baby Softly Ombre lightweight (“3”) yarn (available in 4 oz, 377 yards skeins)- about a ¼ skein or 1 oz used for the set
Size 4 mm straight knitting needles
Yarn needle (for seaming)
Gauge: about 24 sts and 30 rows (in st st)= 4 inches
Size: Newborn (0 to 3 months)
Finished Measurements: (unstretched) Hat- 10 inches circumference and 7 inches long. (Stretched) Hat- will stretch comfortably to 15 inches.// Mittens 4 ½ inches long (including cuff which is 2 inches long) and about 5 inches in circumference
Notes: This set is worked flat and then seamed together. To make the ribbing, you will K the P sts and P the K sts.
Abbreviations Used (American Terminology):
CO- cast on
Sts- stitches
K- knit
P- purl
K2tog- knit 2 sts together (decrease)
P2tog- purl 2 sts together (decrease)
RS- right side (of work)
WS- wrong side (of work)
Hat Instructions:
Starting at the bottom edge of the hat, CO 84 sts
(RS) Row 1- (K2, P2) across the row (84 sts)
Repeat Row 1 for 6 inches, ending by working a WS row
Crown Shaping:
(RS) Row 1- (K2tog, P2) across the row (63 sts)
(WS) Row 2- (K2, P1) across the row (63 sts)
(RS) Row 3- (K1, P2tog) across the row (42 sts)
(WS) Row 4- (K1, P1) across the row (42 sts)
(RS) Row 5- P2tog, (K2tog, P2tog) across the row (21 sts)
(WS) Row 6- K1, (P1, K1) across the row (21 sts)
(RS) Row 7- P1, (K1, P1) across the row (21 sts)
(WS) Row 8- K1, (P1, K1) across the row (21 sts)
Next- Leaving the sts on the knitting needle, cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing the seam. Using a yarn needle, draw the yarn tail through the sts that are on the knitting needle. Remove the sts from the needle and pull the sts tightly closed and secure. Continue to sew the seam of the hat shut all the way to the beginning CO edge. Secure yarn and weave in ends.
Mitten Instructions (make 2):
Starting at the cuff, CO 24 sts
(RS) Row 1- (K2, P2) across the row (24 sts)
Repeat Row 1 until the cuff reaches 2 inches, ending by working a WS row
Making the hand:
(RS) Row 2- K across the row (24 sts)
(WS) Row 3- P across the row (24 sts)
Repeat Rows 2&3 for 2 inches, ending by working a WS row
Shaping & Closing the top of the hand:
(RS) Row 4- (K2tog) across the row (12 sts)
(WS) Row 5- P across the row (12 sts)
(RS) Row 6- (K2tog) across the row (6 sts)
(WS) Row 7- P across the row (6 sts)
Next- Leaving the sts on the knitting needle, cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing the seam. Using a yarn needle, draw the yarn tail through the sts that are on the knitting needle. Remove the sts from the needle and pull the sts tightly closed and secure. Continue to sew the seam of the mitten shut all the way to the CO edge of the cuff. Secure yarn and weave in ends.
